About Us

This is a web-based journalism project about modern China—a country undergoing massive industrialization and technological change. The project began as an intellectual inquiry and journey to China.

In late May 2009, I traveled to China to witness signs of extraordinary economic growth and to explore its impact on society. The trip—part of a graduate program in international trade—was an eye-opening journey. More than an adventure, the exploration of China provided a new lens in which to view and understand our modern, global economy.

Using multimedia tools of new journalism, Inside the Modern Dragon investigates and answers questions about China’s economic development. And it invites viewers to join the inquiry. Specifically, ITMD asks: What are the keys to the China’s economic success? How does that success manifest itself in society? Is it a sustainable model? As China asserts itself as a global economic power, what values will it offer the international community?

This project offers viewers several ways to explore the topic. It features articles coupled with videos that give viewers tools to understand the culture, society and people of China. On the left side of the home page, you will find links to research-based articles. On the right side of the screen, you will find links to travel essays providing personal observations of China’s cities.

The scope of Inside the Modern Dragon is expanding to include essays by people of Chinese heritage, scholars of globalization and people conducting business in China. This project also welcomes contributions from undergraduate and graduate students traveling in China. Because students witness some of China’s most cutting-edge developments in innovation and industry, they are a good resource to tap.
